Today, Monday 29th March marked the launch of Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library Week.
‘Pull up a chair and escape in a book’…. Just one of the invitations being issued to all during Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library Week which will take place from April 19th – 25th in the 359 public libraries around the country.
Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library Week, which is being run in association with public library service, is encouraging people to think about all that their library has to offer and the fun that can be had by adults and children alike through a trip to their local library.
Libraries will celebrate READISCOVER Week with exciting events including readings by children’s author and rugby pundit Brent Pope in libraries in Cork, Waterford, Mayo and Louth while Book of the Year Winner Colum McCann will do a reading in South County Library, Tallaght on Thursday, April 22nd.
Further events taking place in public libraries during READISCOVER Week include photography exhibitions, vocal performances, writers’ evenings, children’s face painting and storytelling sessions to name just a handful. Speaking about the initiative, Senator Mark Dearey, Chairman of the Library Council said, “The aim of READISCOVER Week is to celebrate the fantastic things that happen in libraries around the country right throughout the year. We are thrilled that Bord Gáis Energy has partnered with us for this programme – without their support READISCOVER Week would not be possible.”
He continued, “The old image of libraries as stuffy, quiet places where people were constantly told to be quiet has gone. Now our libraries are dynamic community facilities which are there to be enjoyed by all – young and old. The Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library week should remind people just how great their library is and, for people who haven’t visited recently, we hope this week will kick start the habit of a lifetime.”
David Bunworth, Managing Director of Bord Gáis Energy said, “We are delighted to be working with the library service on this initiative. The libraries offer a free service to all in the wider community and it’s a fantastic leisure activity that parents or even grandparents can enjoy with their children and grandchildren. We hope this week will serve to remind us all of the hard work that librarians do year round across the length and breadth of the country.”
Brent Pope, ambassador for Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library Week, commented, “READISCOVER Week promises to bring lots of fun to libraries around the country and it’s important that people realise that endless entertainment opportunities are available in their local library every day. I am really looking forward to visiting a selection of libraries around Ireland throughout READISCOVER Week.”
