FÁS eLearning at the Library Project nominated for Star Award

by nmcnamara on 20 January, 2012

The STAR Awards (Showcasing Teamwork, Awarding Recognition) are an awards initiative coordinated by AONTAS as part of the annual Adult Learners’ Festival to acknowledge the fantastic work undertaken by adult learning projects throughout Ireland. The awards celebrate the positive contribution that these projects make to our society, our economy and our local communities.

The FÁS eLearning at the Library project has been shortlisted for a  Star Award in the Nationwide category.

The project is a partnership between the nationwide public library network, FÁS, and An Chomhairle Leabharlanna.

The programme is aimed at those who want to develop their skills in a supported workshop environment.

Since its launch in 2008 over 4,000 people have benefitted from the programme.

Following a review last year the programme was re-launched as tutor-led sixteen-week programme which will offer learners a two hour-session per week in the supportive setting of their local public library.

The revised programme will lead to a nationally recognised FETAC award – Computer Literacy (FETAC Level 3).

In addition to the tutor-led training, participants will also have access to additional resources

  • Know IT: a CD-Rom and Workbook designed for people who wish to take their first steps in learning about computers. It concentrates on practical tasks such as sending and receiving email, simple word processing and using the internet to find information. Know IT also contains a unit on computer basics and tutorials on mouse and keyboard skills.
  • NALA’s Write on 4 Work (www.writeon.ie): an online course, with dedicated online support, which offers further FETAC certification across 10 individual modules including Computer Literacy, Digital Media and Internet Skills.

For more information contact Brendan Teeling in the Library Council or Adele Barret (adele.barrett@nw.fas.ie) in FÁS.

A total of 41 projects have been shortlisted in five different categories. Click here to see the shortlisted projects.
