The Irish Folklore Commission, now the National Folklore Collection in University College Dublin (UCD), was established in 1935 for the collection, preservation and dissemination of Irish folk tradition. To this end, collectors travelled Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man and further afield gathering customs, beliefs, verbal art and vernacular culture. A core element of their work focused on traditional music and song.
Throughout the year 2010 a number of events are taking place to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Folklore Commission.
An exhibition based on the music and song holdings of the National Folklore Collection was launched by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Edie Wynne, at the Central Library, ILAC Centre on 3rd August 2010. The exhibition continued at the ILAC Centre until 14th August.
The exhibition consists of twelve large panels/ boards and an accompanying dvd (20 mins.) illustrating elements of music, song and dance in the National Folklore Collection. The exhibition is now available to libraries and interested bodies.
