<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2687/4416197569_ecd8e82fb3_t.jpg" alt="Music PAL" class="" /style="border-color:white; padding-right:10px;"align="left" />Access to music libraries and archives will become easier with the launch of Music PAL announced today (March 8th 2010) at the Royal Irish Academy by the novelist and radio broadcaster Deirdre Purcell.
Music PAL is the only music resource sharing scheme within the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The scheme will facilitate access to a wide range of music resources and services in libraries and archives throughout the island of Ireland.
Everyone with an interest in music will be able to apply for a Music PAL Access Card at the library they use on a regular basis. The Music PAL Access Card will allow them to visit and access the resources of the libraries and archives that are participating in the initiative.
Music PAL includes 10 public, 9 higher education, 3 conservatoire and 5 special libraries throughout Ireland, a total of 27 institutions in all. Many of these hold broad music collections of various sizes, while others (such as for example the Irish Traditional Music Archive and the Contemporary Music Centre) focus on specific musical genres .
Music PAL is an initiative under the Pathways to Learning programme which has been developed by the Committee on Library Co-operation in Ireland (COLICO). Its purpose is to broaden access to materials in all participating libraries by setting up a structure for referring library users to relevant resources held by other institutions in the scheme. The concept arose from the success of a cross–sectoral library provision in the UK (Inspire). COLICO agreed to explore the potential for transferring the programme into an Irish context.
As part of the Pathways to Learning programme a sister scheme, Cork PAL, will be launched simultaneously in Cork also today (March 8th 2010) by Minister for Education and Science, Mr Batt O’Keeffe. Cork PAL, the first regional scheme involving a cluster of libraries in the Cork area, includes eight libraries, facilitating access to academic, local authority and hospital collections.
Read more about Music PAL and Cork PAL on the PAL web site or contact colico@librarycouncil.ie.

A digital media centre, workshop and multi-purpose hall have also been promised for the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dublin under a multi-million development boost for third level.
The projects are finally going to tender almost four years after they were originally announced.
Building is expected to begin later this year and the facilities, which will benefit over 5,000 students, will be completed by the end of 2012.
They will be built under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme which the Department of Education will put on the market next week. Under the model, a private company agrees to finance and build a facility, and then maintains and manages it for 25 years, providing services such as cleaning and security during that period. In return, the Government will pay the company a fixed sum each year for the duration of the contract.
Education Minister, Batt O’Keeffe, said the Government considers the projects “strategically important investments for the smart economy” and they “will create hundreds of jobs in construction at a challenging time for the sector”.
Surprisingly little research has been done on the publishing of poetry in Ireland from days of the Yeats sisters’ Cuala Press to the world of the internet – though several thousand volumes and pamphlets have appeared during this period. UCD is now particularly well placed to host research on this material as the Poetry Ireland library of books and pamphlets, much of it originally collected by Austin Clarke, is on long-term loan in the UCD Library.
This event, the fourth in a series of UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland symposia on print cultures and the history of the book, concentrates on English-language material printed by Ireland’s poetry publishers in the twentieth century and will include an assessment of the Poetry Ireland collection. The seminar as a whole is designed to interest poets, publishers (and poet/publishers) as well as critics, bibliographers and those who would like to learn more about poetry publishing in Ireland. Though this seminar will be concerned with poetry published in the English language, it is planned to hold a seminar on Irish-language publishing in the not-too-distant future.
The event will start on the evening of 5 March with a plenary lecture by Professor Tom Dillon Redshaw, University of St Thomas, Minnesota who will speak on Liam Miller and The Dolmen Press, chaired by Professor Declan Kiberd, and will continue will a full day of lectures and interviews on 6 March. The full programme of events is now available.
Venue: Room H204, Humanities Institute Seminar Room.
Organisers: Professor Andrew Carpenter, Dr Lucy Collins and Dr Marc Caball.

The DVD provides parents with insights into children’s experiences with the Primary School Curriculum, along with an overview of the curriculum itself. It also shows how parents can support their child’s learning at home before and during primary school, and in getting ready for post-primary school. This is presented through the learning stories of five children.
The DVD is available to view in five languages: English, Gaeilge, Francais (French), Lietuvi (Lithuanian) and Polski (Polish).
Libraries wishing to participate in this initiative are invited to contact The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, 24 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. e-mail: info@ncca.ie; tel.+353 1 7996406
