A lecture by Professor Andrew Carpenter, from the School of English, Drama and Film in UCD, on Swift and Gulliver’s Travels, will take place in the Seminar Room of the National Library of Ireland as part of the events programme for the Dublin: One City One Book 2008 project. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 1pm. All are welcome and no booking is required. Rare Swift material, translations and illustrated publications of Gulliver’s Travels will be on display in the National Library of Ireland during the month of April.
Now in its third year, Dublin: One City, One Book, an initiative of Dublin City Council Public Libraries, is a project designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. To celebrate Gulliver’s visit to Dublin, 15 events and exhibitions will be held throughout the capital in April for both adults and children. For more information, visit the project website.

Eight novels, including Winterwood by Irish author Patrick McCabe, have made the shortlist for the 2008 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
The shortlist was selected from a total of 137 novels nominated this year. The Award is worth €100,000 and is the world’s most valuable literary prize for a single work of fiction published in English. The eight shortlisted novels are among 137 nominated by 162 public library systems in 122 cities worldwide.
The Lord Mayor and Patron of the Award, Cllr. Paddy Burke, today officially confirmed the eight novels on this year’s shortlist:
The Speed of Light – Javier Cercas (Spanish) in translation.
The Sweet and Simple Kind – Yasmine Gooneraratne (Sri Lankan).
De Niro’s Game – Rawi Hage (Lebanese).
Dreams of Speaking – Gail Jones (Australian).
Let It Be Morning – Sayed Kashua (Israeli) in translation.
The Attack – Yasmina Khadra (Algerian) in translation.
The Woman Who Waited – Andrei Makine (Russian) in translation.
Winterwood – Patrick McCabe (Irish).

Ireland’s leading writers, poets, journalists and thinkers will be descending on Dublin City Hall between 7 and 9 March 2008 for the first Dublin Book Festival.
The festival is organised by Irish Book Publishers’ Association (CLÉ) and supported by the Arts Council; the Department of Art, Sport and Tourism; Bord na Leabhar Gaeilge; Dublin City Council; Dublin City Libraries and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Readers will have a unique opportunity to interact with book publishing professionals and their favourite Irish authors during reading group sessions.
The preliminary festival programme is available at www.dublinbookfestival.com.
The official festival programme will be launched on Wednesday, 27 February. All events are open to the public and entry is free.

Dublin City Public Libraries are hosting a workshop for crime writers with crime writing experts.
Where? Pearse Street Library, 138-144 Pearse St., Dublin 2

Speakers: Co-founder of the Orange Prize Jane Gregory is the literary agent for best selling crime authors such as Val McDermid, Minette Walters & Mo Hayder. She is also co-founder of the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival.
Maria Rejt is the publishing director of Macmillan, Pan & Picador as well as editor for Colin Dexter, Minette Walters, Kathy Reics & Scott Turow. She also teaches creative writing.
