UCD Adult Education will be presenting two courses in association with the National Library of Ireland:
The course on Yeats and his poetry, based on the National Library’s extremely popular exhibition Yeats: the life and works of William Butler Yeats, will explore the life and work of Yeats and will consist of lectures, seminars and guided tours of the Yeats exhibition. By focusing principally on the poetry of Yeats, the following topics will be examined: his early poetry of escape and anticipation and his portrayal in verse of both the Civil and Anglo-Irish Wars. The course will also investigate how Yeats’s poetry reflects his preoccupation with friendship, Thoor Ballylee, Charles Stewart Parnell and Cuchulain, while there will also be a discussion of the controversy caused by his play The Countess Cathleen. The Course tutor is Gerard Dineen.
Venue: National Library of Ireland, Kildare St, Dublin 2.
Tuesdays, 10am – 12.30pm, 29 September – 17 November.
Tours of the exhibition Yeats: the life and works of William Butler Yeats focusing on the theme of ‘Yeats and Myths’ will take place during Heritage Week at 1pm on 24, 25 and 26 August.
Uncovering 1916: this course will explore the events surrounding the 1916 Rising. Lectures will reveal the context, course and aftermath of the rebellion as well as issues surrounding its interpretation and commemoration. Manuscript material, newspapers, ephemera and a trip to the National Photographic Archive which will house a new exhibition dedicated to the period, will elucidate the subject for participants. The course will conclude with a field trip to the Pearse Museum in St. Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham. The course tutor is Carole Holohan.
Venue: National Library of Ireland, Kildare St, Dublin 2. Wednesday mornings, 10am-12.30pm, 30 September – 18 November.
For more information about these courses, or to book, please contact UCD Adult Education at (01) 716 7123. Bookings will be taken from 10 August.
